Morsi refuses asylum in Turkey

Ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has refused offers to seek asylum in Turkey, Turkish newspapers reported a source as saying yesterday.

Yeni Şafak reported the head of the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH), Fehmi Bülent Yildirim, as saying that Morsi had refused several attempts to move to Turkey.

Yildirim’s remarks came during a protest staged in Turkey against an Egyptian court’s decision to uphold the death sentence imposed on Morsi, the first freely elected Egyptian president.

Speaking during the protest, Yıldırım said that Morsi preferred to stay in his country along with his friends. “If you execute Morsi, thousands more Morsis will be raised,” Yildirim said.

Yildirim warned that serious unrest will engulf Egypt if the death sentence is carried out.

“The unrest will not remain limited within Egypt’s borders, because the Muslim Brotherhood has a strong influence to stimulate mass groups into action across the entire Muslim world,” he was reported as saying.

“It is a strong movement, which is well organised in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Far East,” he said. “It is capable of mobilising nearly 100 million people in the Muslim world.” (MEM)
