1st Year of Good Governance Celebration Today

The Good Governance Government will hold its first anniversary celebrations of the formation of a consensus government in Matara today(19).

The celebrations will be held under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The government said the event will be held with the participation of Ministers and parliamentarians representing all parties.

The unity government was formed following the 2015 General Election held on the 17th of August. The United National Front obtained the highest number of seats during the General Election.

The UNP led by Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe obtained 106 seats while the United People’s Freedom Alliance secured 95 seats. The Prime Minister addressing the nation following the election victory said the people of the country by exercising the franchise confirmed the January 8th revolution.

Prime Minister said that he received a mandate to continue the good governance policies and to arrive at a consensus to build a national framework. Accordingly the two main political parties, the UNP and the SLFP decided to form a national government for the first time in the history of Sri Lankan politics.
The 2015 August election was also the first national polls held following the appointment of President Maithripala Sirisena to the office.
