Heavy Rains Continue to Lash Mumbai; People Asked to Stay Indoors

 

Normal life was hit for the second day in Mumbai on Saturday June 20 as rains continued in the city, resulting in water-logged roads and rail tracks.

It has been raining heavily since the wee hours of Friday June 19, paralysing public transport in India’s financial capital.

On Saturday morning, people were seen wading through waist-deep waters to reach offices and schools.

On Friday, Mumbai received 10 percent of the season’s showers in one day. Authorities had also issued a high tide alert in the coastal city. People were requested to stay indoors as far as possible and not to venture to the shores.

The train services, considered the life line of Mumbai, were restored on Saturday morning after it was crippled due to heavy downpour on Friday, said local media reports.

Stranded residents urged government to come up with a solution to the poor drainage system in the city.

The entertainment capital of India has traditionally had trouble, with monsoon season with water logging and flooding of roads disrupting normal life in the city. In the year 2005, at least 1000 people were killed in floods in the city. (Times of India)
