Government Decided to Provide Period of 4 Months for Owners of non Registered Motorbikes to Register

The government has decided to provide a period of four months for owners of non registered motorbikes to register their vehicles.
Co Cabinet Spokesman Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing this morning said there is a large number of unregistered motorbikes in the country.
The Cabinet paper stats that there are numerous non-registered motorcycles in the Department of Motor Traffic and such motorcycles are useful in rural areas where ample public transportation is absent while they contribute for the rural agricultural economy and self-employment.
The Cabinet of Ministers stated that it is suitable to provide an opportunity to register such bikes through imposing a surcharge to ensure the law in order to prevent fraud, corruption and theft.
He further  said due to motorbikes not being registered the government losses out on a significant income.
The proposal tabled by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to provide 4 months for the registration of such motorbikes under provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, in a manner that importers will not be affected, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
