SLFP to Contest Under the ‘Hand’ Symbol at LG Polls

President Maithripala Sirisena addressing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s 65th convention in Kurunegala, yesterday stressed that the SLFP will contest the upcoming Local Government elections under the party’s traditional ‘Hand’ symbol.

He pointed out that he is the President who is mostly close to the general public as he came from a humble back ground when compared to the other six Executive Presidents in the country. “We need the support of all for this endeavour,” he added.

Meanwhile, all 38 SLFP parliamentarians in the Joint Opposition, the group of MPs loyal to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, stayed away from the 65th SLFP party convention as predicted.

It is significant that Nirupama Rajapaksa, a close relative of Parliamentarian MahindaRajapaksa also participated in the convention.
