Police fire kills Cattle thief

A suspect was killed by Police fire as he refused to stop at the Police checkpoint when requested.

Police Officers at the Mangalagama checkpoint in Aranthalawa, Maha Oya acting on a tip regarding a Lorry allegedly transporting stolen Cattle proceeded to flag down the lorry in question. However the suspects had not heeded the warning and had sped past. The Mangalagama checkpoint had notified the Aranthalwa Police who had also tried to flag down the lorry at the Aranthalawa checkpoint but failing to do so have opened fire.

A passenger traveling in the back of the lorry was injured and later was pronounced dead from the injury upon being admitted to the Maha Oya Hospital.

The lorry was found abandoned on a byroad in Borupana. The cattle could not be located however it was evident that the lorry had been used to transport livestock.

The incident took place around 2.30 am today (22).
