Sri Lanka Tea Sees Fair Demand at Auction
Sri Lankan tea overall saw fair demand at this week’s Colombo auctions with demand improving towards end of day, brokers said.
“Low Growns totalling 2.7M/Kgs in Leafy/Tippy catalogues met with good demand,” Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers said in a report.
“In the Leafy catalogue OP/OPA’ s gained Rs.10-15/- per kg whilst the below best types gained further. OP1/BOP1’s too were fully firm to dearer barring a few select best teas which were barely steady.”

Sale no. 36 concluded this week with a total quantity of 5.5M/kgs coming under the hammer. There was fair demand.
Ex-Estate offerings maintained at 0.8M/kgs. Overall quality of teas from the Western Planting districts were lower to previous week. Nuwara Eliya’s together with Udapussellawa’s maintained whilst Uva’s showed a decline.
Western BOP’s were generally firm together with the Best Western BOPF’s. A selection of brighter BOPF’s in the below best category gained Rs. 10-15/- per kg whilst others where quality was not maintained sold at irregularly lower levels. Brighter Nuwara Eliya BOP’s gained Rs. 20-30/- per kg whilst the corresponding BOPF’s met with fair demand. Other BOP’s too, gained but to a lesser extent. Corresponding BOPF’s remained firm. Udapussellawa BOP’s were firm whilst the brighter BOPF’s gained Rs. 20/- per kg and the coloury sorts maintained. The availability of Uva seasonal teas showed a decline. Consequently, high priced Uva BOP/BOPF’s met with less demand and were at times difficult of sale. Others, particularly the coloury BOP’s maintained whilst the corresponding BOPF’s gained.
Shippers to the CIS and the Continent were active whilst Japan too operated on a fair selection of teas.

PEK/PEK1’s were irregular at the commencement but gained marginally as the sale progressed and closed at fully firm to dearer levels.
In the Tippy catalogue high priced FBOP’s were barely steady .Others and FF1’s were however fully firm to dearer. Teas at the lower end too were fully firm to dearer. In the Premium catalogue prices were irregular with the exception of few small leaf tippy teas that were fully firm to dearer. Shippers to Dubai, CIS, Iraq, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait were active this week.
