Aandavan Kattalai Dominates Dhanush’s Thodari at Box Office

Director M Manikandan has done it again. His second movie Aandavan Kattalai, which had a quiet Friday release against actor Dhanush’s Thodari, is slowly gaining dominance at the box office.
This is not the first time that a Manikandan’s film has emerged as an unexpected winner at the box office. His National Award-winning film Kaaka Muttai (2015), which was expected only to entertain a niche audience, took the box office by storm with the support of the masses.
5 Reasons To Watch Parched
Aandavan Kattalai on Friday collected above Rs 2 crore, which was a good start considering the advance booking of the film was not up to the mark. However, the footfalls for the film began to increase following glowing reviews from the critics and audience. The comedy drama, starring Vijay Sethupathi, has raked in over Rs 8 crore in four days since its releases, said reports.
The word of mouth for the low-budget flick has been so good, that the theatres have started to do a lot more shows and given it bigger screens.
Thodari, which released on Thursday amid huge expectations, came as a major let down to both critics and fans. The film suffered from bad first day reviews, which affected its theatrical collections in the following days.
According to reports, the film collected Rs 4.32 crore on its opening day and only managed about Rs 6.18 crore in the next three days. On Monday, the business of film dropped further as it collected only Rs 1.05 crore, taking its five-day total collection to a little above Rs 11 crore.
The word of mouth was so poor for Thodari that theatres began to cut down on the number of shows for the film to accommodate Aandavan Kattalai. The film has been running to packed houses since Saturday.
“Many theatres across TN has shifted #AandavanKattalai to their bigger screen from Matinee show today. Proof – WOM & good reviews helps,” tweeted Sreedar Pillai, a critic and film trade analyst.
According to reports, on Sunday and Monday both, Thodari and AK, collected almost same at the box office. “#AandavanKattalai gets 2 shows in the bigger screen from today … 11.35 am & 10.05 pm in Vettri 3.05 pm in Rakesh,” tweeted Rakesh Gowthaman of Vettri Theatre.
