Minister Mangala Samaraweera spoke regarding the MIG deal involving former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse.
The main allegation made by the Minister being that the Defense Secretary commenced the War only once securing commissions amounting to a fortune. He also stated that if these allegations were to be proven the conspirators would not only be condemned as traitors to the nation but would lose their civil rights and a long jail sentence would await them.
The Company that had made the payment for the aircraft known as Belimissa is addressed in London, England. But when further inquiries were made into this it has become evident that no such company save a telecommunications company exist under that name.
Mangala Samaraweera speculates that the British Virgin Islands are well known for Laundering money and hiding illegal funds and that the Belimissa company was only registered a week prior to the MIG deal.
The Ministers main question was if the deal took place between two countries why was the Belimissa Company involved and why were the funds sent to the British Virgin Islands.
He further stated that Udayanga Weeratunga who served as the Ambassador to Russia since 2006 is close relative to the Rajapakse’s and it was he who intervened between the Government and Ukraine to make the deal. He also stated that Mr. Weeratunga was involved in private arms deals while he served as ambassador. We wait to see if Minister Samaraweera can back and prove the serious allegations he has made.
