DG Customs Orders to Stop Investigating on Under Valued Super Luxury Vehicles Imported

More than 800 super luxury vehicles including Benz, Audi, BMW, Range Rover, etc. imported quoting under value have been currently investigated by the custom officers. They are in the process of ascertaining the actual value of this vehicle to compute the correct custom duty to be recovered from the importers. All of a sudden, the Director General of customs has directed customs officers through customs director B.R. Athukorala to stop the investigation. This order has been issued in writing on 21st of September 2016. This directive is in violation of the Government Gazette notification No 1901/03 dated 10th February 2015 issued by the Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake.
As a result of stopping this investigation Government has to lose 400 billion said Government Trade Union Chief Secretary W.R.P.Wijayakone. He has appealed to the President and the Prime Minister to assign the responsibility of determining the custom duty of these super luxury to the custom officers.
