New Method to Appoint High Commissioners

In the past Srilanka High Commissioners cum Ambassadors to foreign countries were selected by the Foreign Ministry and posted after screening by the High Post Committee of Parliament.

Minister of foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera submitted a Cabinet paper proposing a change in the procedure. Accordingly, in future all appointments of High Commissioners cum Ambassadors will be previewed by the President, Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign affairs.  Country’s Business Magnates, Vocational Experts will also be considered for High Commissioners cum Ambassadors post in future.

The Cabinet approved this proposal.
