On Sunday(23) evening , a group of rowdies equipped swords and axes raided a textile shop in Chunnakam town and tried to rob. They have cut and chopped everything at their sight . In this melee they found two cops in civil silently observing their actions . Immediately they turned towards them and cut with swords. They are two cops assigned on NIB duties in Chunnakam. They were admitted to the Jaffna hospital with stab wounds, police sources said. Hospital sources said injuries are not life threatening. A police investigation is underway to identify the suspects, an official added.
In the recent past sword cutting has increased in the Jaffna Peninsula. When a bail application was taken for inquiry in the High Court of Jaffna , the High Court Judge refused to grant bail to a student who was involve in sword cutting. In this instance the High Court Judge has ordered the DIG of Northern region to take immediate step sword cutting incident. Chunnakam incident took place after this order.
