Karthi’s Kaashmora: Five Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Dark Thriller. Baahubali isn’t one of Them
Actor Karthi’s Kaashmora has created a lot of interest among the cine goers. Going by its trailer and after learning bits and pieces of its story, it is a fair guess to say that the film packs all the elements to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the south. Its comparisons to Baahubali notwithstanding, Karthi’s film has intrigued the audience.
The black fantasy is directed by a relative newcomer Gokul, who had previously received appreciation for the presentation of his films. Besides Karthi, the film stars Nayanthara and Sri Divay in the lead roles.
It is clear that the film is the likely first choice in south this holiday. However, here are five solid reasons why we think the film will outlive its pre-release anticipation and emerge successful at the box office.
The makers of the upcoming films Kaththi Sandai, Kadavul Irukaan Kumaru and Saithan had initially planned to release them on Diwali. However, these films had to back off from the race as distributors and exhibitors were clear about their preferred choice — Kaashmora and Kodi. The film is a winner already in the eyes of the trade experts, who understand the pulse of mass audience and what their expectations for a Tamil film on a big festival like Diwali will be.
Actor Karthi
Coming from a celebrity family, Karthi easily landed his first film. And he never looked back. Although most of his films are formulaic, Karthi as an actor has the ability to make them interesting with his performance. Meanwhile, the actor is on a winning streak, His last few outings, Madras, Komban and Thozha were a box office hit. With Kaashmora, he is set to deliver his fourth commercially successful movie in a row.

Above all, Karthi is playing three different roles. And his role as Raj Nayak in the film is likely to become everyone’s favourite character in Tamil cinema this year.

Genre
Kaashmora is a multi-genre period film that packs the elements of horror, comedy and action. The last film that we can recall in this category is 2010 film Aayirathil Oruvan, a fantasy-adventure directed by Selvaraghavan with Karthi in the lead role. The story seems to be shrouded in mystery that goes back at least 500 years. While we have seen saints and tantriks tilted towards evil practices do a lot of bad things on big screen, a film fully based on black magic, is something we haven’t seen in recent times.
Period film
Ever since S S Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning was released, films with a historical backstory are compared to it. The Telugu film has established a new standard in making period films, and Kaashmora is no exception. The Karthi-starrer has about 30 minutes of period drama, which is said to be the highlight of the film. The role of Karthi as Raj Nayak and Nayanthara’s character as Ratna Mahadevi have already captured the imagination of the audience.

Inevitably, the period portion in Kaashmora will be tested against the standard set by Baahubali. Will it live up to it? Well, will let you know in about 24 hours from now. However, in fairness, we have to consider the fact that the film was made at a cost of Rs 55 crore, a tiny fraction of Baahubali budget. Nevertheless, makers of Kaashmora are confident of entertaining people with the film’s historical part.
Nayantara’s Ratna Mahadevi look in Kaashmora instantly became a hit with the movie buffs, as she looks very dominating in her warrior queen avatar.
VFX
Let’s face it, Tamil films are not known for their special effects. Even to this day, computer generated imagery are mostly used in ghost films or devotional films. The CGI is mostly used either to create god or devil, barring Shankar’s film. Tamil filmmkers are yet to explore the depths of using special effects in films and Kaashmora could just be the beginning of that technology exploration.
The VFX team led by Chennai-based visual effects studio said to have worked round the clock to ensure the release of Kaashmora on Diwali. Initially, the film was planned for a Pongal release next year. The film has 90 minutes of VFX, which has been developed by 20 VFX studios and 100 technicians.
The special effects in the war sequences, as seen in the trailer, is a treat for sore eyes. Arguably, it will be the best war sequence ever produced in Tamil cinema.
