US to work with Sri Lankan President on human rights issues

The United States Embassy in Sri Lanka has said that the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has promised to address the human rights issues and the U.S. is looking forward to work with the President.

Following the release of the U.S. Country Reports on Human Rights for the year 2014 last week, US Embassy spokesman, Joshua Shen has told the English weekly Sunday Leader that the human right issues highlighted in the report were referring to the past year.

He said the United States was looking forward to working with President Maithripala Sirisena as this government works to pursue a future for Sri Lanka that is peaceful, democratic and prosperous.

The 2014 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices published by the U.S. Department of State said the Sri Lankan government is yet to hold anyone accountable for alleged violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law that occurred during the conflict that ended in 2009.

“He has promised to address human rights issues, establish good governance and the rule of law. We are looking forward to working with President Sirisena and this government to support this cause,” the spokesman was quoted as saying.

The spokesman said the United States continues to engage regularly with the Sri Lankan government and civil society representatives to address long standing issues related to reconciliation, democratic governance, justice and accountability.
