New water tariffs before January 2017 Hakeem

Minister of Urban Development and Water Supply Rauf Hakeem while addressing a press conference announcing cabinet decisions said yesterday, that they proposed to increase the minimum water tariffs of Rs.310 to Rs.540 for first 15 cubic meter (15000liter), which is sufficient for a 5 member family. Beyond it they waste water. In order to arrest this situation and avoid Rs. 9 Billion loss increase was proposed. In this region low water rate of Rs.18 per day is proposed to be charged only in Srilanka. Now only 45% of the population is enjoying this pipe water facility. In order to extend this facility to balance 55% of the population this increase was proposed.

A cabinet subcommittee is considering revision of water tariffs. New water tariffs will be introduced before January 2017, he concluded.
