A video taken of Mr Greenshields’ attempts to capture the huge snake shows him trying to yank it out as it tries to escape.
Anton Meijer, who lives in the apartment below the one in the footage, told News24 that the snake was found at 9am on Thursday and that his neighbour tried to remove it himself.
‘He started pulling it from the toilet but it was clinging to something. The more he pulled, it got agitated. It went back into the drainage system,’ he said.
Mr Greenshields was unable to capture the snake and now faces the arduous task of visiting every flat in the building until he finds the snake, which could have wriggled through the pipes into any of the apartments.
‘The snake was found inside the toilet of one of the apartments but we couldn’t remove it. It has since gone back inside the pipe system which is very ziggy zaggy,’ he said.
‘I’m telling people to keep the toilets closed. If the lid is closed it will be like a barrel and it won’t come out but if it finds an opening it might come out and continue its journey into their houses,’ he said.

The snake catcher added that the ‘big and strong’ snake is the largest he has ever seen.
Snouted cobras can grow up to 2.5 metres long and are highly venomous.
A bite from one can cause swelling, respiratory failure and eventually death if untreated.
The cobras are usually found in areas of moist savanna in north eastern South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and southern Malawi.
