Navinna Wants Gunaratnam to Give up Australian citizenship If he needs SL citizenship

In the recent past,   the Frontline Socialist Party  carried out  a campaign  to obtain  Srilanka citizenship   to it’s  Leader Kumar Gunaratnam. In this connection some members of the Frontline Socialist Party have met the Prime Minister and several other ministers recently and made a request on behalf of Mr. Gunaratnam.

His prison sentence ends on7th  December 2016. Joint Opposition MP Dinesh Gunawardane raised a questioned  from Minister of Wayamba Development Cultural Affairs and Immigration and Emigration S. B. Navinna, as to why Sri Lanka citizenship cannot be granted to Gunaratnam as his parents are still living in Srilanka?  He also wanted the Government not to deport him at the end of his sentence in Srilanka.

 In response  Navinna said, Gunaratnam can be given the Sri Lankan citizenship if he  gives up  Australian citizenship and  apply for Sri Lanka citizenship.

Observers say  while  several others  were given duel citizenship,  asking him to  renounce Australian citizenship to give Sri Lanka citizenship is discriminatory .
