Handunnetti Asks President Not to go Ahead with Hambantota Port Agreement

JVP parliamentarian and COPE Chairman Sunil Handunnetti on Tuesday requested President Maithripala Sirisena not to go ahead with the signing of a lease agreement to hand over a majority of shares of the Hambantota Port to a Chinese Company.
In a letter to the President, Hadunnetti said the JVP is in disagreement with the above decision.
Hadunnetti said an international port is a focal point when it comes to both a country’s economy and security. He said although there is only two weeks remaining for the signing of the agreement, the country does not know what its terms and contents are.
He requested to at least present the lease agreement which has a 99 year span to Parliament and reveal its content to the people.
Hadunetti said the government is morally bound to reveal the terms of the agreement because none of those involved in the transaction would be alive in 99 years.
