Two Ministers Splitting Hair Over Granting Visa to Investors
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake announced recently that any foreigner , who invest more than US$ 300,000 will be granted temporally resident visa.
Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe rejected it by stating there was no cabinet paper on this matter and if a cabinet paper is submitted he would see that the cabinet paper is rejected, Further he said US$ 300,000 is a negligible amount. Considering land price per perch in Colombo this is nothing and this move only opens the door for beggers to enter the country .Further he said, granting residence visa to foreigners would throw a challenges to small traders of this country and Ravi Karunanayake had no business in issuing such a statement without consulting the cabinet.
In reply Ravi Karunanayake maintained that Minister Rajapakshe was misinformed and did not know what he was talking about.
