Who is Instrumental for Wimal’s Arrest and Imprisonment?
A newspaper published in Srilanka quoting Joint Opposition sources reported that Basil Rajapakshe was behind that arrest and imprisonment of Wimal Weerawansa.
Newspaper further reported, according to sources, Basil has urged Wimal to continue politics with him from one front. However, Wimal has not agreed to this. Instead, it was reported that Wimal and Udaya Gammanpila had recently aired certain terms to accept the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena. Wimal Weerawansa had managed to evade arrest until recently due to a deal between Basil Rajapaksa and an UNP bigwig to split the SLFP and create an anti-Maithri political party. It is due to this deal that Wimal had evaded arrest until recently despite facing several allegations.
Earlier the FCID was prepared to arrest Weerawansa several times, but it had been prevented by ‘higher orders’ of the Government.
Recently the President met FCID officials and raised the issue of inactiveness in prosecuting political offenders.
In response FCID disclosed Political influence exercised by the higher orders. The President had then directed the FCID officials to do their duty without bowing down to any influence.
Hence, Wimal Weerawansa was arrested and imprisoned.
