Law Against Inciting Ethnic Differences ….

Visiting Australian Labour Party MP, Julian Hill met Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs  Swaminathan at his Ministry yesterday.  They discussed about  economic development, education and on several other matters.
When they  discussed  about ethnic problem in Srilanka Julian Hill said, that there is a law in Australia to ensure equal status to it’s citizens belonging to different ethnic groups. This law deals with discrimination showed in schools, working places and in public places. Not only discrimination of any ethnic group but also it covers media fields , social media, criticizing cultures of other ethnic groups. This law protects freedom of speech and debates too. He suggested such a law of  this nature  is more appropriate for Srilanka.
The Srilankan Minister while appreciating his suggestion said, that Fundamental Rights enshrined in Srilanka Constitution ensures protection against  ethnic discrimination.  However, such  a separate law is beneficial to  monitor and take follow up action on ethnic discrimination, he concluded.
