Environmentalists and the fishing community have informed the ministry that Giraa fish are on the verge of extinction, as they are being caught on a regular basis.
Shallow waters around tropical countries such as Sri Lanka is a favourable environment for Giraa fish. The fish generally grows upto 3 to 4 feet long, with the potential to grow larger. The Ministry of Fisheries stated that while it is not a popular food with Sri Lankans, in many other countries it is consumed regularly.
The Ministry stated that a special meeting will be held with the fishing community in Chilaw today in this regard and the Ministry is considering placing a fishing ban on Giraa fish.
