Akila Justifies Establishment of Private Universities Such as SAITM

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam while  addressing a press conference at the Ministry said, as all school leavers could not be taken into State Universities. The government should give some land  to establish private universities such as SAITM in the country.      Further he said according to international standard there should be a certain number of the doctors for the certain size of population. He said that he was the only person to adjourn a debate in Parliament against SAITM. SAITM is  Mahinda’s baby and we are forced  to adopt the baby.    I rose against  SAITM in Parliament in order to bring it up to a certain quality and standard.  If private Universities agree to maintain quality  specified by  the government  there is no  objection to provide lands for them .  Two medical universities would be established in Kuliyapitiya and Sabaragamuwa.

The   Government has funded Rs. 2 for the construction of the Sabaragamuwa medical university.   Establishing private universities will help us to stop the flow of  foreign  exchange to other countries, he concluded.
