Rice millers numbering 120 rice processors in Polonnaruwa,, Anuradha pura, Marandagahamulla, Kekirava, Kantale , Nikarawettiya, Aanamaduwa and Tissamagaragama met on Saturday (11) in Pollannaruwa and decided to demand revision of control prices imposed by the Government. They have decided not to release rice stocks in their possession to market until a decision is taken pending the meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday (14) on this matter, said President of the Maradangahamula Rice Producer’s Association B.K Ranjith.
They said, that the price should be revised as follows.
Nadu – Rs 87 per kilo
Sampa – Rs 90 per kilo
Red raw rice – Rs 80 per kilo
In the meantime, Myanmar Commerce Minister Dr. Than Myint held talks with the delegation led by the Srilankan Ambassador in Myanmar K. W.N. D. Karunaratna at his office on January 23rd and signed a memorandum of understanding on rice imports . Srilanka has invited Companies to submit bids for rice export to Srilanka. Only 10 companies had applied. Out of this, we have selected five companies , officials said. These five Myanmar Companies had tendered to export 50,000 tons of rice to Srilanka by June 2017.
