Streets to be in Darkness Countrywide
Due to the power crisis that has arisen in the country, the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy is compelled to limit street lights countrywide. Ministry Secretary has requested the secretaries of Urban Councils and Regional Councils to switch on street lamps for only an hour in the night and at dawn. A meeting is scheduled to be held in Colombo on 21st February 2017 in this connection.
In the meantime, CEB Engineers Union announced that due to draught water levels at reservoirs have fallen and only 11% of the total need of the electricity is being produced from water based generation of electricity. 18.6% of the total electricity requirement is produced and provided by the private sector. 50% of the electricity requirement is being produced by Norachcholai Coal Power Generation Plant.
