President Directs IGP to Assist Universities to Eradicate Ragging
Ragging was used as an instrument to introduce new students to senior students in a most decent manner in earlier days. It was confined to talk only and no physical torture . But now ragging has taken a different turn with physical torture resulting in injuries and even on death.
Sri Lankan universities have seen a rise of student ragging in recent months as the seniors carry out various cruel acts to be performed by the freshers.
Recently, 15 students involved in such a ragging incident on the fresh students from the Peradeniya Agriculture Faculty were arrested and remanded.
President Maithripala Sirisena has directed IGP today to assist the University authorities to eradicate ragging from Universities.
