2012 Welikade Prison Gun Battle Victims to be Compensated

In the gun battle that erupted between protesting prisoners and security forces, 27 prisoners had been killed and 20 others were injured.

Government has appointed a three member committee to investigate and report along with the recommendations. This committee has submitted it’s report to the government, but it was not released to the public.

In the meantime, through a cabinet paper Minister of prison and prison reforms D.M.Suwaminathan has proposed a compensation scheme for victims. The cabinet has approved the payment of compensation of two million rupees to the heirs of each prisoner killed and rupees 500, 000 to each prisoner who was injured.
