Southern Expressway Earns Rs 178.6M

Expressway Operation, Maintenance and Management Division Director, S. Opanayaka said, that the average daily revenue generated through Southern Expressway tolls had increased nearly by 25% during the week prior to Sinhala & Tamil New Year.
From 7th  Friday to 14th  Friday 607,500 vehicles have travelled through the Southern Expressway and had generated revenue of Rs 178.6 million during the said days.
In comparison to last year’s New Year season there has been around 20% rise in vehicles using the Expressway and the income has risen by about 25%.
He further said,  that there has been a 30-40% reduction of accident reported and in average only two minor accidents were reported.
Furthermore, the highest reported number of vehicles crossing the Southern Expressway per day was 65,200 which had generated revenue of Rs 19.2 million.
He noted that there has not been a drastic change in the number of vehicles that used Katunayake Expressway. Opanayake added that the traffic on the Southern Expressway is expected to be high today (17) since those who went South for the New Year to outstation areas are expected to return.
