Signing of Hambantota Port Agreement Pave Way For China’s Naval & Air Force Base in SL
Indian Former Navy Commander Vice Admiral Arun Kumar Singh has in an article under the caption ‘’China’s Cheque Book Strategy ’’ published in Decan Chronical daily stated , that Srilanka signing of Hambantota Port Agreement with China would pave way for China to establish their Naval and Air force base in Srilanka. He further stated, that Srilanka is the first country , which learnt a lesson from’’ China’s Cheque Book Strategy’’ . During previous Mahinda’s era to construct railway lines, establish a new container yard, construction of high ways joining Galle and Colombo, establishment of Mattala Airport in Hambantota China’s engagement was permitted. Today, Hambantota Port and Mattala Airport have not been gainfully utilized and become a financial burden to SL Government. China has invested 9 Billion dollars in Srilanka . Srilanka was unable to repay loan of 1.1 billion dollars.
Under these circumstances , in order to obtain some relief Srilanka has proposed to enter into an agreement with a Chinese Company to grant 60% to 80% management for 50 to 99 years lease.
If this agreement is signed, it would pave way for China to establish it’s Naval base in Hambantota Port and Air Force base in Mattala Airport. Then it will become a reality.
