Granting of GSP+ to SL Before EU Today

A  proposal by the group of EU representatives who recently visited Sri Lanka to assess the prevailing conditions in the country and thereby judge Sri Lanka’s eligibility for the Generalised Scheme of Preferences plus or GSP+ tax concession will be submitted to the European Union today.
European Member of Parliament Anne-Marie Mineur speaking to media following their visit to the island last week said under old conditions Sri Lanka will not be able to obtain the GSP+ concessions adding under new conditions Sri Lanka will most likely benefit.
Anne-Marie Mineur commended the proposal by the government to provide 50 per cent of benefits received from the GSP+ to employees, while also stating that a lot of work to be done.
Accordingly the EU will take up the proposal for consideration over the course of the next several days.
The final decision on whether or not Sri Lanka will be granted GSP+ will be declared on the 11th of May 2017.
