The All Ceylon Peasants Federation on War Path Against Rice Import
The All Ceylon Peasants Federation , National Organiser Namal Karunaratna said, that there was sufficient stock of rice for consumption up to the beginning of the year 2018 . Hence, there is no need to import rice.
Anuradhapura, Pollannaruwa and Killinochci districts are geared for harvest shortly . There will be harvest from 18,000 acres and 150,000 acres of land in Kavudula and Pollannaruwa respectively.
Once the harvest is completed, there will be rice stock of 26 million metric ton . Hence, if rice is imported at this juncture, it will badly affect the local farmers. According to this stock, 1 kg of rice could be fixed at the wholesale price of Rs 64 and the retail price of Rs 68 . Hence, there is no need for import rice at this juncture , he concluded.
