The All Ceylon Peasants Federation on War Path Against Rice Import

The All Ceylon Peasants Federation , National Organiser  Namal Karunaratna said, that  there was sufficient stock of rice  for consumption up to the beginning of the year  2018 . Hence, there is no need to import rice.
Anuradhapura, Pollannaruwa and Killinochci districts are geared for  harvest shortly . There will be harvest  from 18,000 acres and 150,000 acres of land in Kavudula and Pollannaruwa respectively.
Once the harvest  is completed, there will be rice stock of 26 million metric ton . Hence, if rice is imported at this juncture, it  will badly affect the  local farmers. According to this stock,  1 kg of rice could be fixed  at  the wholesale price of  Rs 64  and the retail price of Rs 68 . Hence,  there is no need for import rice at this juncture , he concluded.
