If the Govt. Acted  on COPE Recommendations Hambantota  Port Need Not Have Been Given to China.

COPE Committee Chairman  JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti said, had the Government acted on recommendations made by the  COPE committee , the need to grant Hambantota Port on lease to  China would not have arisen .

During the last 1 ½  years  COPE  Committee closely examined  misuse , frauds and financial irregularities in  98  investigations in  state  institutions , which included  Petroleum Cooperation, Ceylon Electricity Board, Srilankan Airlines  Telecommunication regulatory Commission, Foreign Employment Bureau and Port Authority  etc and submitted  it’s report  with valuable recommendations.

As the Government has ignored  COPE Committee recommendations, Hambantota Port was compelled  to be given on 99 year lease  to China.
