Cabinet Approved Minimum Fines on Motor Traffic Offences
That cabinet has approved the increase of minimum fines to be imposed on several motor-traffic offences to Rs.25,000.
The proposal brought forward by the Minister of Transport Nimal Siripala de Silva was approved by the cabinet today (10).
A minimum fine of Rs.25,000 will be imposed for

Driving without a valid driving license

Driving without a valid insurance cover
-
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The decision has been made following the drastic increase of motor-traffic accidents and the elevated death-toll resultant from accidents.
Additionally Rs.2500 fines for

Underage driving
-
Speeding
-
Over taking from the left
-
Reckless driving will be increased to Rs.2500.
Cabinet also approved the increase in fines over several other offences.

Rs 3,000 fine will be imposed on motorists who surpass the stipulated speed limit by 20%,

Rs 5,000 for driving at a speed limit between 20-30%

Rs10,000 for exceeding the speed limit between 30-50%.

The fine imposed for driving 50% above the required speed limit has been set at Rs 15,000.

The fine imposed for overtaking from the left has been increased to Rs 2,000
-
While reckless driving will lead to a fine of Rs 10,000.

The Rs 5,000 fine imposed on underage drivers will be increased to Rs 30,000 .

The fine imposed on using mobile phones while driving has been set at Rs 2,000.
