Three-wheel Drivers Issued New Directives

Several new conditions have been laid out for three-wheelers engaged in passenger transportation that will come into effect from the 1st of October.
The gazette notification in this regard was signed by Minister of Transport Nimal Siripala de Silva.
Accordingly the right side of the three-wheeler should have a door that is fully or partially closed thereby preventing passengers from getting in or getting off from the right side.
The gazette states that the three-wheel driver alone should travel in the driver’s seat while transporting persons either side of the driver has been prohibited.
Three-wheel drivers have been advised to refrain from allowing persons from distributing leaflets, notices or marketing from the passenger seat.
Loud sounds or music played in the three-wheeler should be at reduced volumes that does not hinder others travelling on roads.
The gazette also notes that the speed meters in three-wheelers should be clearly visible to the three-wheel driver.
The registration number, the drivers name and licences number, a picture of the driver and the telephone numbers of the police stations that the three-wheeler is registered should be displayed on the back of the driver’s seat for the passenger’s observation.
Three-wheel drivers have been advised against smoking while driving.
Three-wheel drivers have also been informed to drive a passenger to his or her destination through the shortest routes possible.
A taxi meter should be installed in all three-wheelers while upon the passengers request a receipt should also be issued.
The receipts should include the distance, registration number of the vehicle and the cost of travel.
