Wigneswaran Proposes Presidential Commission to Probe Murders & Disappearance of Journalists
The Free Media Movement met Chief Minister of the Northern Province CV Wigneswaran and held extensive discussions in regard to journalists, who were murdered or made involuntary disappearances during and after the conflict with the LTTE. The representatives of the Free Media Movement brought to his attention the delay in the legal process related to these matters.
In response Northern Province Chief Minister said, Sri Lanka must conduct a comprehensive investigation into these incidents as a signatory to the international covenants. Hence, Presidential Commission should be appointed to bring about justice to journalists, who were subject to assaults, murdered or reported missing during the past period.
Further he said not only journalists, but it is necessary to declare a correct stand on the youths, who disappeared during the conflict.
As a concluding remark , he said media reforms should be carried out on a self-regulatory basis of owners and journalists.
