President to Address UN General Assembly Today

The 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly is commencing  at the UN Headquarters in New York, today (19). The General Debate is held under the theme, ‘Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet’.
President Maithripala Sirisena is also due to address the General Assembly this evening .He intends to brief the world leaders on consensual politics that is taking place in Sri Lanka, and reconciliation and peace being nurtured in the country. Further the President will also share the initiatives taken by the government after declaring 2017 as the Year for Poverty Alleviation, and the concept of Green Development, mooted by the government. This will be the third occasion that the President is addressing the UN General Assembly.
He is also scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with several world leaders participating in the sessions.
