Mersal Box Office Day 1: Vijay-Atlee Unseats Vivegam’s Opening Day Collections In Chennai, Earns Rs 1.50 Crore

The buzz surrounding Mersal had touched phenomenal heights before its release due to the various hurdles the film faced on its way to the big screen. Living up to the pre-buzz release, the film has taken a massive opening across centres in Tamil Nadu and abroad. According to trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai, the film has collected Rs 1.50 crore in Chennai alone on its opening day beating Vivegam to set a new record at the cash counters. Ajith’s Vivegam had earned Rs 1.21 crore on Day 1, unseating Rajinikanth’s Kabali’s Rs 1.12 crore collection.

Apart from Chennai, Mersal has also stormed centres abroad taking a grand opening. According to trade analyst Ramesh Bala, the film had earned Rs 3.08 crore from premieres and the opening day collections in the US. Mersal also has been received very well in Australia and United Kingdom establishing a strong opening there. The Vijay film has earned Rs 68.01 lakhs in Australia and Rs 81.08 lakhs in the United Kingdom on its opening day. Mersal had also opened at around 800 theatres in Malaysia earning a jaw-dropping Rs 90.31 lakhs on its opening day, according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Mersal is Vijay’s 61st film and his second outing with director Atlee after Theri. Vijay’s biggest release yet, the opulent film was bankrolled by Sri Thenandal Films. With music AR Rahman, the film had a solid star cast comprising SJ Suryah, Vadivelu, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Akkineni and Nithya Menen.
