Permanent Houses for May 2017 Flood Victims

The government yesterday approved a proposal by Disaster Management Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa to construct 1,122 houses to resettle families whose homes were completely damaged by floods.
Heavy pouring rain on 18 th and 19 th May resulted in flood. May 2017 flood affected 15 districts. It caused complete damage to 2,093 houses and partially destroyed 11,056 houses. Apart from houses millions worth of property was destroyed. In this devastating flood over 200 people lost their lives. Nearly 700, 000 people were displaced.
Government took necessary measures to ensure their safety and accommodated in makeshift temporary shelters, some of which were in schools. Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has submitted a Cabinet paper to construct 1,122 houses to resettle families , whose homes were completely damaged by floods. The Cabinet has approved the proposal. They will be settled in five of the fifteen affected districts, as per Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa.
