Attempt on Douglas Life Emil Kanthan Acquitted & RI For 6 Others

When the EPDP leader Douglas Devananda visited Kalutara prisonon June 30,1998, to enquire about their welfare, some detainees attempted to kill Douglas. LTTE activist Emil Kanthan and fifteen others were charged for attempted murder in Colombo High Court.
The Colombo High Court yesterday acquitted LTTE activist Emil Kanthan from all charges of attempting to kill Douglas Devananda in Kalutara Prisons. But six other suspects were sentenced to ten and a half years of rigorous imprisonment.
The case was heard in the absence of several of the accused including Emil Kanthan. Counsel Lakshman Perera appeared for Emil Kanthan
