Interim Order On Holding Local Govt Council Elections

The petition filed against the Gazette issued by the government pertaining to Local Government delimitation and the number of council was taken for hearing today.

The petition was filed by a group of individuals, including the Secretary of the Podu Jana Front Sagara Kariyawasam and member of the party Sagarika Abeywickrama.

The petition accuses subject Minister Faizar Mustapha of misusing his power to amend multi-member seats as individual seats.

The Appeal Court today issued stay order preventing implementation of Gazette on delimitation of local government Councils till 4th December 2017.

In other words this will pave way to postpone the local government elections, lawyers say.
