Shehan Madushanka Named In SL Squad For Bangladesh Tri-Series

Shehan Madushanka, who has played just three first-class games and three List A games, has been added to Sri Lanka squad for tri-series in Bangladesh involving Zimbabwe. Angelo Mathews will take over as captain from Thisara Perera in the 16-man squad.

“He’s got pace and you can’t coach that,” Sri Lanka’s newly appointed coach Chandika Hathurusingha said on Tuesday (January 9). “When we go to the next World Cup, we’ll need about seven or eight fast bowlers who have played at least 15 ODIs each. We’ve chosen Madushanka as a player we might use in the long-term.”

Dinesh Chandimal too has returned to the squad for the series. The Test captain was dropped for the limited-overs series in India are a below-par show against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. Kusal Mendis, who was dropped for the complete tour of India, has also made a return along with Wanindu Hasaranga.

Sri Lanka Cricket had acknowledged they wanted to protect Mendis, who was struggling for form, and didn’t want his confidence to go down even further in India. Hasaranga has played seven ODIs and his last match was against India in Colombo in September last year.

Sri Lanka play their first match, the second of the series, against Zimbabwe in Dhaka on January 17. The final will be played at the same venue on January 27.
