If Ranil Removed From Premiership UNPers Threaten to Impeach Prez

United National Party Parliamentarian Chaminda Wijesiri said that if any attempt is made to remove Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe from office, the Party would definitely bring a motion in Parliament to impeach President Maithripala Sirisena.
He made these comments in relation to rumours that subsequent to the Local Government (LG) polls, the Prime Minister would be changed and that a new Government would be formed.
Wijesiri added that they would also act to obtain the support of the Joint Opposition (JO) with regard to the impeachment motion.
He added, if the UNP wins at the upcoming LG elections, they would form a UNP Government to which he expected President Sirisena’s support would also be forthcoming.
Meanwhile, a powerful Sri Lanka Freedom Party Member said, the President intended to go on a new political journey after the LG polls and that the UNP and JO are expected to support it.
In order for an impeachment motion against a President to succeed, it would need the signatures of a minimum of 75 Parliamentarians. If an impeachment motion is presented to Parliament, until the motion is taken up for debate, the President’s Executive powers would be restricted. If needed, the President can prorogue the Parliament prior to the motion being presented to the Parliament.
