Gota’s Request to Release Him From Avant Garde Case Rejected by HC

Former Director General of the Bribery Commission had filed a case against 08 persons including former defence secretary Gotabaya Rjapakshe. They were charged for causing loss of Rs 11.4 billion to the state by permitting Avant-Garde Maritime Services (Pvt) Ltd, to operate a floating armoury between August 7, 2012 and January 8, 2015, in violation of laws by providing unlawful income to this private company.
Gotabaya Rajapakshe has filed a case against it, stating that the case against him was filed without the official consent of the Department of Bribery and Corruption, which is illegal and prayed to release him from the case.
The Colombo High Court today (2) rejected his request stating that the Director General of the Bribery Commission and Bribery Commission are not two different entities and they are one. Hence, the need to obtain consent didn’t arise, the verdict reads.
