Audit Bill Before the Cabinet This Week

As the Supreme Court had determined that the Audit bill is consistent with the constitution and the Attorney General had informed the Secretary to Prime Minister that the Bill was in accordance with the Constitution, the Government had decided to go ahead with passing the Bill.
Sources close to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday, the much-delayed Audit Bill is expected to be presented to the Cabinet of Ministers this week.
The Bill is expected to give wide powers to the Auditor General on making public institutions more accountable. However, there was a notion among some sections of the Government that empowering the Auditor General with wide powers would put State Officials in difficulty.
