25% Women Representation Not Practicable In 10 LG Bodies

At least ten local government bodies faced the problem in maintaining the 25 per cent woman representation because of a shortcoming in the Local Authorities’ Elections Act, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said.

Though the Act stipulates that each of the councils should be made up of 25 per cent woman representatives, the parties that contested the polls in these ten local bodies appear to have found it difficult to nominate women candidates.
