IP Rangajeewa Arrested Yesterday In Connection With the Killings in Welikada

IP Neomal Rangajeewa of the Police Narcotics Bureau was arrested yesterday evening by the CID over the Welikada prison riots   occurred in 2012. In the prison riots 27 prisoners died and 48 prisoners injured. The Government appointed a committee to inquire into the incident. The committee report was considered and Attorney General consulted.
According to the evidence uncovered in the committee appointed to investigate this incident, Inspector of Police Rangajeewa attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau had gone for the prison operation by noting on the field note book that he was attending another duty. With regard to the incident, he faces allegations of having illegally entered the prison and having gathered selected prisoners by calling them out by name prior to the killing. The CID had previously noted that there was ample eye witness evidence available to arrest Rangajeewa.
Inspector of Police   Rangajeewa had been asked to report to the CID for a statement yesterday. After recording his statement, he was arrested, said Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara.
