Imprisoned Monks Are Wearing Prison Jumpers – Prison Chief.

Certain Buddhist monks protest against   Gnanasara Thera was given prison jumpers. Prison Chief Thushara Upuldeniya.has clarified the position regarding monks in prison.
All Buddhist monks in prison are required to wear prison jumpers just like the other inmates.Currently 15 monks imprisoned over murders and other crimes are wearing the prison jumper. They are serving prison terms of between six months and seven years. wi Welikada prison housing eight of them, he said.
Additionally, 10 other monks arrested over various charges are being kept in detention, he said.
No prisoner, despite being a member of the clergy, has been treated differently and all should be governed by the prison laws.
Responding to the same issue justice minister Thalatha Athukorale Gnanasara Thera was sentenced according to the country’s laws and it had nothing to do with politics. Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Ven. Omare Kassapa Thera demanded an immediate releasing of Gnansara Thera.
If not, all monks will stage protests and boycott state functions, he warned.
