Is Mahinda Rajapakshe Fears To Take Legal Action Against New York Times Because It May Be Proven?

A report published by the New York Times newspaper accused former President Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa of obtaining a sum of $7.6 million from the Chinese company in charge of the Hambantota Port project as funds for his 2015 Presidential Election campaign.
This is the subject of main talk in parliament and Srilankan politics. Meanwhile.the Puravasi Balaya Organisation says Former President Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa is not taking legal action against the New York Times in fear that the allegations levelled against him regarding obtaining money from China due to fear that it  will be proven true.
Co-convener of the Organisation Saman Ratnapriya speaking to  a media said  intimidating journalists to ensure the media reports are not circulated is not a means out.
However, yesterday Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said he will not resort to any legal action against The New York Times, but will however take legal action against a local newspaper that published a misinterpretation of the report published by the New York Times.
