Navy assists to apprehend 12 persons for illegal activities

(FASTNEWS|COLOMBO) – During the past few days, Sri Lanka Navy apprehended twelve persons who were engaging in illegal fishing at different locations in the island.

Accordingly, a troop of Naval Personnel attached to the North Western Naval Command on foot patrol apprehended four persons who engaged in illegal fishing activities in Thirikkapallama area on last 31 July. Seven kilograms catchment of prawn, a Walllam, a dinghy and 2 banned nets possessed by them were also taken into naval custody and these items along with the suspects were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector-Puttalam for legal action.

Meanwhile, Naval personnel attached to Eastern Naval Command apprehended eight persons who engaged in illegal fishing activities in the Eastern seas, on 02 August. A dinghy and two banned nets used by them were also taken into Naval custody, and these items along with the suspects were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee for onward legal action.

Further, 04 Gelignite sticks, 37 nos. of non-electrical detonators and 3 meters of Safety fuse hidden under a bush in Chiruttoppu area were recovered by sailors attached to North Central Naval Command, on 03 August. The recovered explosive items were handed over to Pesalai Police for further investigation.
