Galaha calms after hospital protest

(FAST NEWS | COLOMBO) – The chaotic situation that erupted at Galaha hospital, following the death of a one and half-year-old child, has been contained.

The crowd who were protesting near the hospital were dispersed by police firing tear gas.

Our correspondent said that the people continued to behave in an unruly manner within and around the hospital premises, until around 8 pm last night.

The doctor in charge was required to be disguised in a police uniform in order to leave the hospital premises as a result of the protests.

The toddler, Sankar Sachee’s parent had been admitted him to the hospital because of the child experiencing heavy phlem and fever.

But he died while being taken to Peradeniya Hospital in a three-wheeler.

The immediate family of the toddler claimed negligence, accusing hospital doctors of failing to examine him.

Meanwhile, the Central Province Health Services Director General Shanthi Samarasinghe said that an investigation has been launched looking into the case.

A senior police officer stated that a special investigation will be conducted to look into the damage caused by protestors to the hospital premises.
